“The Medium without Characteristics – Video Art in the Critique”

Does “video art” still exist? In our digital age, the medium is little by little losing its old analogue stability and its physical presence. In the meantime many artists are abandoning conventional media such as DVD or DigiBeta cassettes and prefer to send passwords to museums and collectors, so that these can download video works from a digital cloud. And televisions and projectors too, are no longer incorporated in the respective works because such technologies are subject to rapid changes. What is left of video art after its dematerialisation? Will passwords, installation guides and copyrights turn it into a mere contract.

The Triggering Town takes the concept of urbanity as its point of departure for a thematic screening, which is divided into three sections: The urban space is the starting point for the works in the first section, which features staged events and performances, documented in the video medium. The second section is dedicated to the phenomenon of the “rural” space or the ideologically supershaped space in border areas and thematises the different political and religious living conditions which go hand in hand with this. The third section combines the implicit velocity of the city with the state of alienation and the loss of identity.
The title of the screening The Triggering Town is goes back to the book published by American poet Richard Hugo (1923-1982) in 1979, which deals with the teaching of creative writing. In the chapter The Triggering Town, Hugo explains the techniques of writing fiction and encourages the truthful description of feelings instead of facts.
