How truthfully can a film documentary show the image of an individual? And how closely can the viewer approach the subject in order to to experience its intimacy?
Sam Easterson creates a surprisingly personal connection to his protagonists: in his piece “Animal Cams”, he has fitted small cameras onto the bodies of various creatures –  mammals, birds, reptiles and even insects, and allowed them to go about their business, undisturbed, in their natural surroundings. This simple technique allows Easterson to give the viewer a remarkably intimate insight into the lives of these creatures. Most of the recorded footage is of low quality, reminiscent of CCTV pictures, and intensifies the voyeuristic feeling of being privy to a supposedly intimate situation. Because the shots follow the creatures’ individual line of sight, they give us the almost disconcerting impression of being in the middle of the mêlée, occupied with feeding and looking after our own species. Cows, bisons, crocodiles, chickens, sheep, wolves and various other animals are part of Easterson’s repertoire of special close-ups of the animal world, presenting the viewer with a habitat that is, naturally, beyond our normal perception.
