In his work “Storyteller”, Belgian artist Nicolas Provost invites the viewer on a mesmerizing visual trip through the world of the neon jungle. Working with footage of night views of Las Vegas, he transfers the images of the city by mirroring them horizontally. At the beginning, the slow, progressive movement of the camera along the reflected skyline of the metropolis generates a feeling of floating along a fantastic, glittering coast. Horizontally mirroring the views of the city, zooming in on the buildings and playing with its reflected shapes, Provost continuously ‘sculpts’ a futuristic reality. Working with a relatively simple technique, the artist manages to process the images, reaching a certain level of abstraction. The viewer is hypnotized by the continuous flow of flickering images of this capital of nightlife. The viewer slowly starts to lose their sense of time and space, passively floating away from reality. Storyteller is a silent film, which only enhances its ‘cosmic’ perception and adds to the meditative effect of the work – a fantastic kaleidoscope of beautiful images.
