Retrospective Kenneth Anger

Forbearer of pop art, pioneer of camp culture: Kenneth Anger, 85 years old, is the last survivor of the early American avant-garde film. With its Kenneth Anger retrospective, Videonale opens a film series which explores the links and interfaces between film and video art. In Bonn Kenneth Anger will present his own works from the „Magic Lantern Circle“ as well as a series of works seldom shown.

„Few artists today have achieved the legendary status, notorious celebrity and sublime mastery of the cinema as Kenneth Anger (b. 1927), one of the greatest virtuoso filmmakers to emerge from the postwar American experimental film movement“, writes the Harvard Film Archive. His avant-garde short film „Scorpio Rising“ (1964) from the „Magic Lantern Circle“ is viewed as the first representative of postmodern cinema and greatly influenced a whole generation of directors. Author and film critic Daniel Kothenschulte is the curator of the retrospective.

The exhibition to the exhibition - The Videonale Parcours

This year, with the Videonale Parcours, VIDEONALE.14 reaches out beyond the museum into Bonn’s Macke district. In cooperation with Bonn institutions, project rooms and the -1/MinusEins experimental laboratory of KHM Cologne, Videonale creates a programme of 13 exhibition projects. All the works can be viewed during the opening week from 14/2-17/2/2013; longer viewing periods are possible on www.videonale.org.

Parcours Highlights

Clea Stracke & Verena Seibt – Musen Bad Video

In cooperation with -1/MinusEins Experimentallabor of the KHM
Bonner Kunstverein, Hochstadenring 22, Bonn, until march 10

People taking a bath or a sauna move through the museum and fill it with new life: Filmed in Kunstmuseum Bonn, „Musen Bad“ (The Musesí Bath) continues an artists examination of the museum as a place, which began in the Kunstmuseum itself. Art and contemplation draw closer to one another, contexts change but remain clearly defined.

Tapemosphere #21
Gesellschaft für Kunst und Gestaltung, Hochstadenring 22, Bonn, until april 7

The art collective Tapemosphere (Balz Isler, Block Barley, Béla Pablo Janssen) use magnetic tapes in an aleatoric sound installation where, running in endless loops, they overlay one another and continually reinvent themselves. Tapemosphere elevates the randomness of the moment to the driving force of their compositions. A homage to time and space.

4 – 7 pm Auditorium Kunstmuseum Bonn

Retrospective Gary Hill

As one of the most important contemporary artists, Gary Hill investigates the relationship between words, sounds and electronic images as a reflection of cognitive processes. In its retrospective, Videonale offers an insight into Gary Hill’s cross-media work. The artist addresses a whole range of themes: from the physicality of language, synaesthesia and illusions to investigation of ontological space and interactivity with the viewer. Gary Hill will appear in person in Bonn.
